The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland is internationally renowned for its collection of art, which was amassed substantially by two men, William and Henry Walters, and eventually bequeathed to the City of Baltimore. The collection presents an overview of world art from pre-dynastic Egypt to early twentieth-century Europe. Its collection areas include ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art; Western European and Byzantine ivories, enamels, icons and reliquaries; Northern Europe and Italian Renaissance painting and sculpture; eighteenth- and nineteenth-century French painting, sculpture, and decorative arts; Western European, Byzantine, Islamic, and South Asian manuscripts and incunabula; Asian art, including Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Tibetan sculpture, ceramics, lacquers, enamels, and paintings; Islamic art; Pre-Columbian sculpture and jewelry; and Ethiopian icons, liturgical objects, and manuscripts.
